How long does a sessions take?
Each session with me will run about 50 minutes. Our first meeting however, will take approximately an hour.
What should I expect?
The first time we meet will include an initial evaluation. We'll take a few moments to collect some necessary background information before we discuss what may be troubling you presently. The background information is important for me to have in order to see a more complete picture and identify any elements I might feel may help or hinder your progress. This initial background information might include some medical history, some family background as well as information about your sleeping patterns, appetite and other day-to-day habits. This is also a good time for you to ask me questions and determine if you feel comfortable sharing your concerns with me. At the end of the first session we'll talk about what you expect from the therapy sessions and what my initial thoughts are for treatment. At this point it will be up to you to decide if you'd like to make the second appointment.
How many sessions does it take before I begin to feel better?
The number of sessions will vary depending on the number and types of issues involved, as well as their severity. One of the ways I can help you better understand what's going on is through homework. By completing the homework as assigned, in most cases, progress can be made more quickly.
What is the difference between a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a psychologist, and a psychiatrist?
I am an LPC and a masters level licensed counselor. My primary focus is on counseling using a variety of methods with individuals, families and groups. A psychologist possesses a doctoral degree and is licensed to practice therapy and conduct psychological testing and research. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medications and sometimes offers psychotherapy.
Do you prescribe medications?
I can not prescribe medication. My primary focus is on counseling. However, If you and I feel medication would be helpful, we would discuss the option and I would refer you to a medical doctor who can prescribe an appropriate medication.
Is medication necessary?
Medication is not always necessary. However, sometimes, medicine can be an important part of your treatment plan. If you do find yourself with a prescription, it is important to continue your therapy if appropriate. The two often work hand-in-hand. Many people find therapy alone to be sufficient, so usually we will try other methods first before referring you for medication.
What about confidentiality?
While the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the RIGHT TO PRIVACY ACT bind all mental health professionals there are limitations . Some specific limitations are when the client waives their right to privacy and gives written consent, when disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the client or others, in matters affecting the welfare of children or elders, when ordered by an official of the court as required by law.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
Your session time is a special time reserved especially for you. A 24-hour notice is required for all cancellations and reschedules.
